The Schwinn bikes kept using the top tube shifter up to about 1949. The English went to handle bar shifters well before Schwinn did.

Your '53 Rudge can be converted by removing the old handlebar shifter and the cable that goes with it (save both).

You mount the top tube (quadrant) shifter on the top tube. You then buy a Sunlight Sturmey Archer-style 3-speed cable. That Sunlite cable is generic and has a pinch bolt, allowing you to use whatever length of it you need. You put ferruled end into the top tube shifter's sleeve and thread the cable as needed, through the pulley and down to the hub. You do not use any cable housing with this - just the bare cable.

https://www.niagaracycle.com/categories/sunlite-gear-cable-3speed-s-a-type-univ-60x65in?utm_source=TPA%20On%20Google%20Shopping&utm_campaign=Top%20Placement%20Ads%C2%AE%20(SPLA)&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=People%20Searching%20For%20Bike%20Parts&utm_content=Google%20Shopping&product_id=41968&device=c&loc_physical_ms=9008188&gclid=CIvfm7fJ7dQCFZ1XDQodT-AIvQ

You can re-use the same pulley as before, but may have to adjust the position of it slightly to get a straight cable angle. The Bike Shedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08088480622389782722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3841108529205226165.post-5328044411662139972017-07-02T11:29:31.349-04:002017-07-02T11:29:31.349-04:00How did you convert the old S/A 3 speed top tube s...How did you convert the old S/A 3 speed top tube shifter?
